May 19 Breakfast
March
3rd Chamber Breakfast:
The
Payment Card Industry Digital Security Standards law places significant legal
responsibilities on merchants.
With the threat of
identity theft and information security breaches ever present in today’s
world, more accountability is being passed on to the merchants.
The
Tax Reform laws that were passed a year ago have undergone new scrutiny.
First proposed as taxes that would be changed in
exchange for lower personal income taxes, this issue has become highly
complicated and controversial.
In general, sales taxes would be raised or added to a number of
products and services.
The thought is that sales taxes spread revenue raising across more
people, such as tourists and in exchange for higher revenues, Maine’s
personal income tax rates could be lower creating a revenue neutral situation
that helps Maine residents.
In theory.
In practice it appears to be very complicated.
A new people’s movement “Vote Yes to Reject 100 New Taxes” has
submitted enough signatures to force a public referendum on the issue.
Both
presenters did a fine job discussing the issues and answering questions,
especially from hotel and motel owners who were clearly caught in limbo as to
what they should be doing on security deposits and prepayments for stays.
In my opinion, the only downside of the presentations was the lack of a
representative from the Maine Legislature so we could hear both sides of the
issue.
The staff at the Chamber will look into providing that opportunity
prior to the June 8th
vote.
Your
Chamber presented both men a Certificate of Appreciation and a complimentary
mug with the Chamber logo on it.
We
have provided a link to our website for you to read the entire handouts from
Greg Dugal, Executive Director of the Maine InnKeepers Association and Curtis
Picard, Executive Director of the Maine Merchants Association.
