The Novel Jazz Septet will be swinging-over to the Saco River Theatre (Buxton, ME) for a dance/concert of swinging tunes by two of the most influential and acclaimed icons of jazz, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, on Saturday, 9 December, 2023, 7:30PM. Join in the fun, whether dancing, or just settling-in to enjoy the performance. The music will focus on dance tunes from Ellington and Strayhorn’s massive repertoire. Dancing or seated, this night will have you tapping your toes! There will be dance floor space, but also plenty of seating for those who wish to listen and dance in their seats. Finally, this will be the band's last Ellington & Strayhorn-featured performance of their 2023 season. Novel Jazz has been a fixture in the Maine jazz scene for almost two decades. Their mission is to share the music and stories of these two giants of jazz who wrote several thousand compositions over their musical careers, two percent of which represents the well-known standards and 98% of which represents rarely heard gems. They’ll perform standard dance tunes from the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire plus newly arranged dance tunes that they have unearthed from the Ellington Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History as well as the Strayhorn Collection at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.
